Curtis Clear Sky & The Constellationz: The Rise of a Modern Indigenous Funk-Hip-Hop Collective
In the evolving landscape of Indigenous music across Turtle Island, few groups blend traditional spirit with contemporary groove as seamlessly as Curtis Clear Sky and the Constellationz. Fronted by vocalist and songwriter Curtis Clear Sky, the Vancouver-based collective has built a reputation for uplifting music rooted in Indigenous identity, social awareness, and musical fusion.
Their sound—sometimes described as "IndigiFunk"—combines hip-hop, funk, soul, rock, reggae, and Latin rhythms into an energetic live experience designed to inspire audiences and celebrate culture.
Origins and Cultural Roots
Curtis Clear Sky was born and raised in Vancouver on Coast Salish territory, where the cultural influence of the region helped shape his artistic direction.
He is Nitsiitapi (Blackfoot) and Anishinaabe, and those roots play a central role in both the themes and spirit of his music.
Rather than separating Indigenous identity from modern genres, Clear Sky intentionally merges them—creating music that speaks to both Indigenous communities and broader audiences. The result is a sound that reflects the reality of contemporary Indigenous life: traditional values expressed through modern creativity.
The Constellationz: A Live Band Experience
Unlike many hip-hop acts built primarily around DJs and producers, Curtis Clear Sky performs with a full live band, making the Constellationz stand out in the Indigenous music scene.
The group's performances feature:
- Live horns
- Funk rhythm sections
- DJs and scratching
- Soul harmonies
- Hip-hop lyricism
This musical diversity allows the band to move between styles effortlessly, creating high-energy shows that blend dance music with powerful messages of empowerment and positivity.
Their concerts are often described as celebratory, uplifting, and interactive, with lyrics encouraging community pride, healing, and unity.
Breakthrough: Indigifunk
The band's defining project to date is the 2019 album Indigifunk, which solidified their reputation in the Indigenous and Canadian music scenes.
Released in May 2019, the album features nine tracks and showcases the group's genre-blending style. The project was recorded and co-produced by Kat Hendrix, released through Indigenous label Dignified Records, and influenced by funk, hip-hop, reggae, soul, and ska.
The album helped introduce the term IndigiFunk, which describes the group's distinctive fusion of Indigenous consciousness with funky grooves and hip-hop rhythms.
