Hellnback: A Pioneer of Indigenous Hip-Hop Recovering Strong and Ready for the Next Chapter
For decades, Hellnback has been one of the most respected and influential voices in Indigenous hip-hop. Known for his powerful lyricism and unwavering dedication to community, Hellnback helped shape the early foundation of Indigenous rap in Canada long before the genre began receiving the attention it sees today.
Right now the veteran MC is focusing on something more important than music—his health. After undergoing a kidney transplant, Hellnback is currently recovering, and the Indigenous hip-hop community is rallying behind him with support, respect, and well wishes.
Fans and fellow artists across Turtle Island are sending strength as he heals, while also looking forward to the day he returns to the mic with new music.
From Samson Cree Nation to Hip-Hop Pioneer
Hellnback, whose real name is Karmen Omeasoo, comes from Samson Cree Nation in Maskwacis, Alberta. Long before Indigenous hip-hop had festivals, awards, and media platforms supporting it, artists like Hellnback were building the culture from the ground up.
In the 1990s, he helped break new ground as a member of the influential Indigenous rap group War Party. At the time, there were very few Indigenous rappers visible in the industry, and War Party quickly became one of the first groups to bring Indigenous voices into the hip-hop spotlight.
The group blended classic boom-bap hip-hop with powerful messages about identity, colonization, community, and Indigenous pride. Their work helped create a blueprint for the Indigenous hip-hop movement that would follow.
War Party's music gained national attention and even saw their videos aired on MuchMusic—an important milestone at a time when Indigenous artists rarely received mainstream exposure.
Building the Foundation with Team Rezofficial
After War Party, Hellnback continued pushing the culture forward by helping form the influential hip-hop collective Team Rezofficial.
The group brought together a new generation of Indigenous MCs and producers, including artists like Drezus and Jay Mak. Their debut album The Foundation went on to win a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album, further cementing Hellnback's role as one of the architects of Indigenous hip-hop.
Team Rezofficial helped take the culture to new audiences, performing across Canada and inspiring younger Indigenous artists to pick up the mic and tell their own stories.
A Voice for Family and Community
Hellnback eventually launched a solo career, continuing to build on the themes that have always defined his music.
Projects like "Family Over Everything" showcased his focus on:
- Family values
- Overcoming adversity
- Community strength
- Indigenous resilience
His music speaks directly to real experiences—stories about struggle, survival, and pride that resonate deeply within Indigenous communities.
Beyond music, Hellnback has also spent years mentoring Indigenous youth, leading workshops, and encouraging young people to use hip-hop as a creative outlet.
Fighting Through Recovery
Today Hellnback faces a different kind of battle as he focuses on healing following his kidney transplant.
But if there is one thing his career has proven, it's that Hellnback has always been a fighter—both in life and on the mic.
The Indigenous hip-hop community is standing behind him during this time, sending messages of strength and appreciation for everything he has contributed to the culture.
Artists, fans, and organizations across the scene recognize that the movement they're part of today was built by pioneers like Hellnback who kept pushing forward even when opportunities were limited.
Looking Forward to New Music
While recovery and health come first, fans are already excited about the possibility of hearing new music from the legendary MC once he returns to the studio.
Hellnback's voice, perspective, and experience remain an important part of Indigenous hip-hop culture.
And when he does step back behind the microphone, there is no doubt the culture will be ready.
For now, the message from the community is simple:
Rest, recover, and come back strong. We're ready for the next round of bangers.
