Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got’įnę Self-Government Treaty Receives Royal Assent
The Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got’įnę have reached a major milestone in their path toward self-government. On October 8, 2026, Canada's Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations announced that Bill C-27 received Royal Assent, giving legal force to the Final Self-Government Agreement negotiated by the Tlegohli Got’ine Government Inc., Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories.

The legislation recognizes the Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got’įnę Government as the government of the Sahtu Dene and Métis of Norman Wells and affirms their inherent right to govern themselves.
Under the agreement, the government will have authority over areas including its own laws, cultural and language protection, education and healthcare programs, and leadership elections. These powers will support decisions made closer to the people whose lives they affect.
The parties signed the final agreement in September 2025 after approximately 20 years of negotiations. Royal Assent is an important step, but the agreement does not take effect immediately: its commencement date will be established by an Order in Council.
For the Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got’įnę, the development represents recognition of their governance and a foundation for protecting rights, preserving cultural identity and building future opportunities.
